How to play PDoD

Pokemon: Dawn of Darkness runs on Windows and is free. Setup takes about five minutes — most of it is the launcher downloading the game.

1. Download

Grab PDoD_Beta.zip (about 12 MB). The zip contains the launcher, not the whole game — the launcher fetches the game files itself and keeps them up to date.

Still on Windows 7 or 8? If the launcher shows a "api-ms-win-core-path-l1-1-0.dll is missing" error, use the legacy launcher instead — same launcher and same game, built for older Windows.

2. Extract it

Extract the entire zip to a normal folder — your Desktop is fine. Don't run it from inside the zip viewer, and avoid Program Files: the launcher needs to write the game files next to itself.

3. Run the launcher

Start PDoDLauncher.exe. On the first run it downloads the game; after that it only fetches what changed, so later launches are quick. Windows SmartScreen may warn about an unknown publisher — the build isn't code-signed. Choose More info → Run anyway if you're happy to.

Window size

The launcher has a window-size dropdown: Native, Large (1.5x), 2x or Fit screen. The original game was a small fixed window; the larger modes scale the whole picture, mouse included.

4. Make an account and pick a starter

Click Register in the game window, choose a name and password, and you're in. You pick your starter on the register screen — all twelve starters from the first four generations are available, not just three.
